Modern garden tools are robust but they do need occasional maintenance to make sure they continue to work optimally and safely.
The brush cutter attachment for the battery-operated multi-tool is easy to maintain between services.
Brush cutter maintenance
Cleaning
- Make sure the brush cutter is off and remove the battery pack so you can’t accidentally switch it on while you’re working.
- Clean loose detritus from the blade with a soft brush.
- Wash blade in soapy water to remove grease, grime and detritus. Dry with cloth.
Sharpening
- The edge of the blade can dull over time. We recommend that you turn over the blade to extend the life of the blade.
- You will need to sharpen your blade or take it to a qualified service technician periodically, and replace it with a new blade when necessary.
- Before you start, please make sure you take the necessary safety precautions - wear cut-resistant safety gloves before handling anything with a blade.
- We also advise wearing safety glasses when sharpening the brush cutter blade itself.
- You might also consider PPE clothing.
REMEMBER! Before removing an attachment from the power head, stop the motor and remove the battery pack.
Sharpening the brush cutter blades
Tools
- Workbench with clamp
- Hex wrench (supplied with tool)
- Soft brush
- Bucket of soapy water
- Clean cloth
- Metal file, whetstone or grinder
Process
- Make sure the brush cutter is off. Remove the battery pack and store out of the way.
- Wearing protective gloves, carefully remove the blade. Instructions on mounting/removing your brush cutter blade are detailed in your product manual.
- Clean loose detritus from the blade with the soft brush.
- Wash blade in soapy water to remove grease, grime and detritus. Dry with cloth.
- Clamp the blade to the workbench securely.
- Put on your safety glasses.
- Using the file, whetstone or grinder, work back and forth over the cutting edge, taking a uniform amount off each area to maintain the blade’s balance.
- Re-fit the sharpened blade, ensuring it is securely tightened.
Ideally you should use a rotary blade balancer, therefore we recommend visiting your local EGO approved dealership.
Regular checks and service
Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. While EGO cordless tools are the best you can buy (we can prove it - check out our warranties), some parts will wear through use.
On a brush cutter, a worn, cracked, or damaged blade can break and pieces of the damaged blade can become dangerous projectiles.
- Please inspect the blade regularly and don’t operate the brush cutter with a worn or damaged blade.
- Before each use, check the blade, guard and front-assist handle and replace any parts that are cracked, warped, bent, or damaged in any way.
- Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation.
If anything is damaged, have your battery-powered cordless brush cutter repaired before use - find your local EGO dealer.
Have your brush cutter serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This ensures the continued safe operation of the power tool.
Battery service
Never try to service damaged ARC Lithium-ion batteries yourself. Service of battery packs should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorised service providers.
What is a brush cutter used for?
An electric brush cutter is the perfect cordless garden tool to control or clear larger areas of overgrown brambles, weeds and shrubs. They have rotating steel blades that allow it to tackle heftier jobs that a line trimmer (strimmer) might struggle with.
Similar to a cordless line trimmer, they are light, hand-held garden tools that can be fitted to a single or double shoulder harness with hip pad for additional comfort.
